Maybeck 3 Crosses Fell Race (ENG)

13 members of Scarborough Athletic Club competed in the 6th race of the Northern Runner Summer Series of Fell races which was held at Maybeck Three Crosses near Whitby on Tuesday 28 June. The race which was the club’s home fixture, covered over 6 miles of typical fell race terrain on the moors, and included 650 feet of climb. Scarborough’s fell runners made the most of home advantage when providing both the winning men’s and women’s teams, and the winner of the women’s race. In addition the club’s women runners achieved a clean sweep by also providing the runner up team.
The first to finish for Scarborough was Louise Brown who achieved an excellent result on her series debut, when she finished 5th overall and the first woman in a new course record by 4 minutes 35 seconds.

Katy Rawnsley had her usual battle with the series leader Kay Neesam of New Marske Harriers, but had to settle for 3rd after winning their last two encounters, and remains in 2nd place overall in the series behind Kay who continues to lead.

The women’s team victory, which was the 4th of the series, was assured when the England Junior international fell runner Charlotte Edge finished 5th and also the first junior runner in the race.

The women’s runner up team was led home by Rhona Haslam and her mother Sue Haslam who raced and finished together. However Rhona was declared 7th and Sue 8th. In the overall series standings, Rhona is in 3rd and Sue 4th and after 4 wins in the Over 55 category, looks likely to retain the age group title. Sue Louth made a very good seasonal debut, when she closed in for the team after finishing up in 13th.

The men’s team was led home by another series debutant James Kraft, who finished well up the field in a splendid 7th overall after contesting the lead in the early stages with the race winner Paul Butler of Loftus Athletic Club, who remains unbeaten in the series so far. James was followed home by Oscar Guallar, who was also making a series debut, and had a very good race to finish in 11th overall. The winning team was completed by another debutant Ted Kraft, the father of James Kraft, who finished in 16th but was the first Over 55 finisher, and Mark Lansell who finished close behind Ted in 16th overall.

The scoring team members were followed by a trio of Over 60 runners who were led home by Neil Scruton, a former series age group winner, but who had to settle for 2nd place on his series debut. Paul Garrity finished 4th in the age group and ahead of Dave Parke who was 5th but has now rose to 4th overall for the series. "
